To say Cancun hadn’t been amazing would be a complete lie. It was to die for and Santana loved everything about it. She loved that she got to spend it with Puck, that it was beautiful weather, the water was crystal clear, and it was romantic, which wasn’t something Puck and Santana did very often. One of her favorite parts though was sleeping in Puck’s arms with nobody else in the bed. It was almost like the perfect situation. Finn wasn’t kicking them, it wasn’t a smaller bed like in Lima, and they didn’t have to worry about anyone walking in on them.
It was the middle of their second night in Cancun after spending their first full day together and Santana could not seem to get any closer to Puck than she already was. She was fast asleep as she kept an arm draped over his torso to keep her close to him and her legs intertwined with his as her head rested on his shoulder. It was weird how quick things were moving with Puck now that they were dating and she honestly didn’t understand why they didn’t start dating again sooner. They were perfect for each other in every way and there was a part of her that knew she never wanted to let him go this time around.
She hadn’t even fully admitted it to herself that she was head over heels in love with Puck but she was. All the signs were there. Wherever she went she found herself almost always thinking of him, and when she was with him time always seemed to fly and she always wished they could just be with each other and never part. She was out cold as she continued to occasionally pull him closer to her in her sleep, letting out a soft groan as she kept her body cuddled close to him before mumbling softly in her sleep.
“I love you, Puck.”
Puck wasn’t sure how it was possible to love a place as much as he’d loved the time spent in Vegas, but that was exactly what he found himself doing as he spent time with Santana in Cancun. It wasn’t like Las Vegas in many ways at all, and yet just like he didn’t want to leave Vegas, he was sure the same would be said about Cancun, maybe even more so. Curling his arm around Santana and pulling her closer to lay against his chest, Puck sighed a happy and content sigh. He loved hanging out with Finn, and he was glad he’d made the last trip, but he would not miss having his gigantic best friend taking up a large part of the bed. Being able to sleep comfortably with room to breath and move was something he’d missed incredibly, and yet even with the extra room available, Puck still had Santana curled in close to him. He’d never admit to being a cuddler, but he did like the closeness and comfort that it provided. It was something that on most nights, he couldn’t get enough of.
As Puck laid there thinking things like, ‘I can’t believe I’m in Cancun,’ and ‘I can’t wait to fuck Santana in the ocean,’ geography was never his strong suit, but when he heard Santana mumble those four words to him, all his thoughts stopped for a second as he laid there frozen. He’d thought she’d been asleep, and as he waited to hear something else, anything else, he was only greeted with the calming sound of her breathing next to him. When he realized she really was still asleep, he laughed softly to himself. He wasn’t the only one with thoughts like that on his mind, and while he hadn’t been trying to hide how he felt from her, it would be even easier to tell her now knowing how she felt too. Leaning his head up, he softly kissed the top of her head, careful not to wake her up in the process, before laying comfortably back down again. “I love you too, Santana,” he whispered to her, even though he didn’t expect her to hear it. If she hadn’t, he knew she would be very soon.
Santana felt Puck shifting as he laid back on the bed and it only made her pull her body closer to him as she felt herself slowly waking up, which was the last thing she wanted to do right now. Her eyes fluttered open for just a moment to glance at him before closing them again as she stayed cuddled up against him. “Stop moving,” She mumbled softly against his chest as she gently nudged his foot with her own. She stopped moving after getting cuddled up to him again and laid there for a moment as she wondered how long she had been sleeping with Puck just laying there. “Why aren’t you asleep?” She barely managed to get out as she blinked her eyes open a few times to look at him before groaning and closing them again—she definitely wasn’t at her best when she was just waking up.
“Can you not sleep, babe?” She asked him as she did her best to shift her body on top of his to look up at him. If he couldn’t sleep then she would stay up and keep him company. She knew how much it sucked when you were sitting there awake, trying to sleep but failing when everyone else was sleeping and she did not want to leave Puck laying there like that.
“You were moving first,” he lied, but he figured since she was sleeping, she wouldn’t have known either way if he was telling the truth of not. It wasn’t like it really mattered, but it was habit to take the other side no matter what. Laying in a bed in Cancun in the middle of the night didn’t change that. As Santana shifted to lay on him more, he slid both his arms lazily around her and hugged her close. “No, I can’t sleep. I keep thinking about everything we’re going to do tomorrow, and other stuff.” Puck’s eyes were more adjusted to the darkness than Santana’s, and he could tell she’d much rather be asleep than having a conversation in the middle of the night, not that he could blame her. He figured he could at least make it worth it for her, and actually tell her more about what he was thinking instead of leaving her hanging. “You talk in your sleep, you know. You tell me all kinds of secrets. I feel like I know you so much better now.”
Puck slid his hand up along her back to play with the ends of her hair as he looked at her the best he could in their dark hotel room. He still couldn’t see was so skeptical about letting him see her first thing in the morning, as he knew that, and waking up with her there in the middle of the night, were two of his favorite things. As he laid there with her, he didn’t know why he was hinting around or not just spilling it right away. He’d known for a while now, and it had almost slipped out more than a dozen times, but he’d always stopped himself for one reason or another. As they laid there together in the honeymoon suite of a hotel in Cancun that as far as he was concerned was the most beautiful place in the world, he couldn’t see a single reason to wait even a second longer. “I love you, Santana.”
“Mm, shut up,” She mumbled when he told her that she was moving first. She wouldn’t have been surprised if she was. She was known to move in her sleep a lot. “Like swimming with dolphins.” She laughed lightly as she gave him a small smile. She knew Puck for some reason thought that dolphins were evil and she couldn’t help but to tease him for it. She could never really help but to tease him. It was just what they did with each other, they always teased and argued with each other but it was always fun, and just who they are.”Shut up. I do not talk in my sleep.”
As he played with her hair she gave him a soft smile as she looked up at him, her eyes finally adjusted to the dark room now that she kept them open without trying to go right back to sleep that second. At his words she froze, her eyes locked on his as she tried to process what he just said. She had to have heard him wrong because there was no way he told her what she thought she heard. There was just no way. “Wha—” She cut herself off as she looked at him, her jaw slightly agape as she just stared at him. “How do you know that?” She asked him quietly her eyes shifting away and breaking eye contact with him for the moment.
After the words escaped Puck’s lips, he knew there was no way for him to take them back. It was one of those moments that he dove in to head first without having a backup plan in case things went bad. It was how he lived his life for the most part, but as he looked up at Santana with what little light that filtered in to the room and saw the look of surprise or maybe just confusion, he did nothing but wished he’d told her sooner. Even if he only heard it from her in his sleep, he wanted her to believe it, and to know how he felt with no strings attached and no expectations along with it. “I just do,” he said with a soft laugh. It wasn’t directed at her, but he knew he was so sure of the fact, that it was hard for him to believe it wasn’t just somehow visible to her all along.
“I’ve known for a while now, and I know it’s a big step, but Santana, I do. I love you. I think about you all the time. The other day I was playing Call of Duty and every sentence out of my mouth started with ‘my girlfriend.’ You can guess the shit that I got called for that one, but I didn’t even care.” He knew it wasn’t exactly the most romantic story, but he hoped she could see his point in all of it. “When you were gone with your parents…I missed you so much.” He reached his hand up and brushed her long hair back from her face. “Not even just sex, but doing stuff like hanging out together and cuddling on the couch or going to breadstix and making fun of the waiters who clearly want to bang you. I just missed you, and it just hit me, it’s not just cause you’re my best friend, it’s because I am in love with you.” It was longer than he meant to explain and he was sure none of it would end up in a hallmark card any time soon, but it was the only way that he knew how to be.
Santana furrowed her brows slightly as he told her that he just knew. She thought she felt the same way she just wasn’t sure if it was love that she was feeling. Aside from family members and Brittany nobody ever told her that they loved her and she was positive nobody had ever been in love with her and she realized that it was Puck all along. He had always been different, right from the start when she first saw him when they were little. The way she did everything she could to be his friend when she first met him, and as they got older she did everything she could to have him notice her and be more than just best friends. A small smile graced her lips at his story as she looked at him. “So whipped,” She mumbled quietly with a teasing smile on her lips.
Her eyes watched him carefully as he spoke, waiting until he finished before leaning up to him and pressing her lips gently to his when he finished, keeping her hands gently resting on his shoulders as she pulled away to look at him before nodding a few times. “I love you too, Puck.” She smiled before moving one of her hands to gently rest on the side of his head as she laid slightly on top of him on the bed. “I always have, I think. All those things….I’ve always felt that way with you since we met.”
Puck laughed as she called him whipped as she had a point. He knew if he was someone listening in to the things he’d revealed to her, he would have said the same thing, and while in most cases he’d have been quick to defend his ego and his badassness, instead he offered up a weak, “am not,” that he was sure convinced her none. He kissed her lips when she leaned down to meet his, and while he told himself that he needed to need to hear those words back from her unless she was ready for it, the smile that reached his face when she said them back could have lit up the room. Wrapping his arms around her body as she laid down against his, he couldn’t help but to think how perfect a fit it was in more ways than one.
“It fucking took us long enough to get here,” he teased with a soft laugh. Maybe the warm feeling he had in his chest and the sense of belonging that he felt when he was with her was what whoever came up with the saying, ‘good things came to those who wait’ had been talking about all along. Their combined dating record with others, and even with each others, was a disaster, and yet they’d ended up right where they needed to be. “I love you,” he repeated again, but in a softer voice just above a whisper. “I just love being able to say it to you.”
